Art galleries and art museums are often used as inter-changeable terms. An art gallery can be part of an art museum. If, in a museum a particular room is dedicated to say Victorian Art, that room is called the Victorian Art Gallery. A contemporary art gallery is one that is privately owned and used for the sale of artwork. It typically allows artists to use their spaces to display their work to prospective buyers. They are free for the public, but charge a commission when paintings get sold. An art gallery can also be a space that is run by an artist-cooperative, that selects and displays pieces of art without commercial interest.
